There is name brand cereal, such as Kellogs and Post but why is there no name brand milk?

Because it's too perishable to be shipped nationwide. Milk has to be produced and sold locally, before it goes bad. There's no time to try and sell it on the other side of the country.
Interestingly enough, you don't have that time problem with cheese or butter, and that is why these are nationally branded, even though they are also dairy products.

Because there's no central location that all milk can come from. There are literally thousands of dairy farms that provide the country's milk supply.

There are name-brand milk substitutes and lactose-tolerant milk.

i have heard of Kellogg's but not post!!

and there is, at least im my country!!!

although, in some countries there are certain products for which there is no market leader because there are so many different brands, all competing so non of them have managed to develop a brand!! but if you SK individual people they might give you different answers as to what there 'name brand' milk is!!

Alta Dena, Ross and Horizon are all milk brands.

Because it usually comes from local dairies - and I would think a dairy farm in NY would not ship milk to a store in California?

Borden is name brand milk, and it is expensive. I never buy it. I just go with the grocery store brand.

because it's so common. it doesn't matter what brand it is ( or will be )

milk comes from cows. any cow. its not like it'll taste different. (unless it's spoiled...yuck XP)
