I can describe your man the same way they once described another Red Sox left fielder: "Carl Yastrzemski is the greatest player in the world... from the neck down." Of course, that was before 1967.
Manny Ramirez is the Jim Morrison of baseball. You never know when he and his band are going to give you a tremendous experience. You never know when they're going to start a riot. (Game 3 of the 2003 ALCS: It wasn't Clemens who was acting like he was in a "roid rage" then.) You never know when he's going to be totally sluggish and disappointing. And you never know when he's not going to show up at all. Bad analogy? He did use the DOOR to the scoreboard, but then, Jim Morrison had better hair.
Jim and his band are in their field's Hall of Fame. Manny will probably make it, but will he show up to accept his plaque? And if he does, who knows what he'll say in his speech?

My thoughts have kind of always varied about Manny.
But one thing NOBODY can dispute is that his offense is awesome. He's a great hitter, plain and simple.I agree with what Kris said, I read an article about Manny last year, and everyone of his team mates said the same thing about him, hes a work horse. He comes to practice early, stays late, and doesn't leave until he has perfected whatever he thinks needs to be perfected.
He may not be media friendly, people may call him lazy or sloppy, but the one thing that people can say about this decade of the Red Sox is that the combo of Ortiz-Ramirez is scary. You got back to back power hitters in a lineup, these 2 are deadly at the plate.

As you can tell by my avatar, he's also my favorite player, and has been since the Red Sox got him before the 2001 season.
Craig is absolutely correct, he as an amazing player and a first ballot HOF'er.
Only people that don't follow the game (casual fans that only watch highlights on SportsCenter, take what people here say as gospel, or are Yankee "fans",) would even have the thought he's lazy.
For the person here that said he's not a hard worker - do you have any idea that he's ALWAYS the first one at practice AND the last to leave? His work ethic is approached by only a few players in the game - Pujols is one that comes to mind. He's a master of his craft - offensive production. If you wouldn't want him on your team, I say GOOD, I like him being a post season MACHINE on the team I follow. You do realize he has the most post season home runs ever right?
He's one of the best right-handed hitters to ever pick up a bat. The only right-handed hitters with a higher career OPS than Ramirez are Albert Pujols, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg and Rogers Hornsby.
As far as him not being a good defensive outfielder - that is also a misconception. He's never had more than 9 errors in a season, and has had 10+ assists in 5 different seasons.
Most people are uninformed about the quality of his overall game.

Manny is my current favorite player (he isn't my all-time favorite...probably number 2 or 3) and anyone who says he sucks on defense has never watched him and is going on the popular opinion only...outside of a couple goofy plays he is pretty solid defensively with a cannon for an arm...he is one of the best all-time contact hitters with power also...and yes he may be lazy sometimes (as most players are)...but I watch him all the time and more often then not he hustles down the line and he is always working out...as for uniform...that is the style nowadays and a lot of players wear their pants like that...Manny used to wear the high socks but now he has changed his style...if you disagree with any of what I have stated you can look up his stats and watch him also...he is a great player and I will always defend him.

He is a great player, many people confuse his demeanor as being lazy....he is not, he is a hard worker, who is one of the best in the game. As far as poor defense, every Left Fielder at Fenway since Yaz has gotten the same label...but that is wrong, left field at Fenway is tricky! He also takes a lotof grief for not hustling on balls he thinks are out of the park, that end up as the longest single in history. He is great, continue to support him if you like him.

He's not my favorite player of all time but I'm right with you. I'll defend him through thick and thin. The guy is not only a great player but he's not uptight at all. He doesn't talk to media a lot but you still see his humor all the time. He goes into the green monster in between innings. The "Jeter's playing golf right now" sign. When he was petting Julian Tavarez. He's hilarious and is definatley a great hitter. He might not be the best defender but he isn't the worst either.

I answered a question about the last 10 AL MVP's and who got snubbed (earlier today)... I went back year by year, and Manny was in the top 10 voting every year (except this year) and there were 2 seasons where he was clearly the league MVP, yet he never won one.
The teams that he has played for have consistently played well; his numbers are 1st ballot HOF worthy; his post-season numbers are off the charts.
Is he a great defender? No - but he does know how to play the Green Monster extremely well. Does he take plays off? Yes.
He's a bit of a nut job, but contrary to popular belief, it doesn't bother his teammates - they know what he can do, and accept the fact that he needs to miss a few games per year, and may even cost them 2-3 wins per year with boneheaded plays. But his bat will win them a lot more than he loses.

ManRam is one of the best players in the game. Sometimes he lacks concentration and does things that make you shake your head such as cut off a throw from center field, but I'd put him on my team any day.

Manny, despite all the nonsense that swirls around him, is one of the best pure hitters baseball has seen in the past 30 years. He's a surefire Hall of Famer.
