It depends on how many days you have skipped and how often you skip them.
Most pill packs are 28 days and they consist of two different colored pills. There are seven pills that are basically placebo (they do nothing) they are there only to keep you in the habit of taking your pills. If you miss these pills you are fine, just make sure that you start taking the other pills on time.
As for the other pills, you really dont want to miss any. Most pills come with information on what to do if you have missed any. Usually if you miss one pill, you take it as soon as you remember, If you dont remember it until the next day you take the pill for both days. I know that it something different if you miss two or more, but you would need to follow the directions in your pills.
If you have any suspicion that you may be pregnant take a pregnancy test as soon as possible. You should talk to a doctor as soon as possible as there are other options such as planB if you have only recently had sex.

Yes, in order for birth control to work effectively you need to take them everyday. If you skip a pill it can cause you to ovulate, which is when you release an egg.
