Considering every moron on ESPN handed him the Cy Young Award before the season started, I would say he did not live up to the hype. But no one should have expected him to. Baseball in Japan is not played at the level it is here. He's a 12-16 win a year guy even on as good a team as the Red Sox.

Well I guess if it was a 1-year contract then no he didn't live up to the hype...I will still hold judgment on Dice-K because I think he will do a lot better in the seasons to follow...if you want to look at just one year no he didn't live up to the hype but I think it is too early to say if he lived up to the hype just yet...you need to give him a couple more seasons before you can get a real good answer to this question.

No he did not live up to the hype. The cy young was handed to him by sports analysis all over the country before the season even began. and sorry a 4.40 e.r.a. from a rookie in his prime coming into a country where nobody has seen his stuff before is not very good. And only 14 wins with that run support . However i think he will do better in 08 expect 17-10 3.8 ERA

With all the hype from last season one would have thought he was going to win 30 games and pitch 5 no hitters. Of course he fell far short of those numbers.
He was okay I guess. With the run support he probably should have done better. He was certainly not worth the money the Red Sox paid him. The up side for him is that he's on a really good team so he should, at the very least do as well.
He better come up with another pitch however because that "Gyro ball" was about a ridiculous as they come. I guess that was part of the media hype as well.

I would say he didn't live up to the hype. He did win 14 games (should have won 18.....lack of run support) and did help them win a World Series Ring. Because the MLB season is noticeably longer than the Baseball season in Japan, I think he got tired around August and wasn't used to the extra games. I believe he will win 16 games next year for the Red Sox.

Dude has unbelievable stuff. He throws about 6 pitches. He was clearly gassed at the end of the season. Maybe not as many 11-0-120 pitch games early on like last year. He will win 15 plus this year, and clear 200 Ks which would make him worth the money.

he did have a successful year; I can't say he lived up to the hype, because the hype was massive.
I expect him to settle down some more in 08, less walks will equal more wins.

Dice K is a solid pitcher who should have a better year in 2008. Many fans believed he fell short because he was paid all that money and didn't win 20 games. He didn't have a great year but he held up to all the pressure very well and has to be considered one of the better pitchers in MLB.
