1: Jimi (Jimi who? ...Like You don't know...)
2: Brian May
3: Frank Zappa
4: Bassist Michael "Flea" Balzary
5: David Gilmour

The guys you listed are, I agree, very TECHINICALLY PROFICIENT, but these are the guys I like to listen to and who pioneered the styles that made Steve and Joe start playing in the first place... Except Flea... He just rocks like Stonehenge...

1. Django Reinhardt
2. Joe Satriani
3. Chet Atkins
4. Yngwie Malmsteen
5. Eddie Van Halen (how could you leave him out?)

That's my list. I play guitar, and I read music. Of course some idiots are gonna put Slash or Jimi in. Slash and Jimi are good, but they aren't the greatest. Slash just sweetpicks and hope it sounds good! Jimi isn't a great composer, but he's my favorite improviser of all time, he could really think on his feet.

A good list, for sure. I think I'd put Claypool higher, though. I need to add Entwistle, McCartney and Lesh. Entwistle for combining the creative use of electronics with his musical talent. McCartney for making the bass the most important thing in the mix and Lesh for pioneering melodic departures from the root of the chord. That means 3 of yours have to go, so I'd take out Novoselic, Burton and I guess Flea. Not easy to stick to 5. Help me understand why you chose #s 2 and 4. Collins is a no-brainer.

In no particular order . . .

Eddie Lang

Django Reinhardt

Eric Clapton

Jimmi Hendrix

I can't think of a fifth one in this category, so I'll say Jose Feliciano. The first time I ever saw Feliciano was on theJohnny Carson show, long before he was famous. He played 'The Flight of the Bumblebee' on the guitar. I was impressed!

Clapton once told me he would accept being on the top ten, but no higher, and that the all time no foolin' second place is way distant best player..and who only had nine fingers to boot.... was Jerry Garcia.

Electric, acoustic , guitar, mandolin, country folk blues rock and space....the man could.and did, frequently in the same song, do everything.

Gilbert, Clapton, Duane Allman would round out my list

you going to argue with EC?
