Toyotas and Hondas are both great, reliable cars. I drive a honda now and my mother a toyota and we haven't had any major problems. My father has always driven Volkswagens....they tend to be a little nicer, roomier, etc....however they cost more to maintain compared to the other three brands you mentioned.

They're all good. It all depends on the specific cars you're looking at. Make sure everything works- lights, horn, turn signals, etc. Look at miles on the clock. See which one has service records because keeping the oil changed is the best thing you can do for a car. I've owned all of 'em, and liked all of 'em. The one I *might* avoid is Honda because they tend to get stolen more. If you're OK with that, consider a Honda. VW is good because they have plenty of power. Ford is an American badge, and that counts for something with me. Toyota is well-engineered for longevity.
Can't get too specific because I don't know where you are, what you mean by "cheap," and which specific cars you're looking at. But that doesn't mean I don't wish you well.
