The Berlin wall was erected by the East germans to keep the East germans from defecting to the West so easily. The wall encompassed the Western sectors of the city, which was an oasis of the West in East Germany.

The wall was initially barbed wire; but the East Germans quickly began erecting the permanent concrete barrier; walling off windows that overlooked the wall (so buildings became part of the barrier too.

The tide of defections lessened, but there were still ambitious Germans who tried to get into West Berlin & West Germany by other means.

the berlin wall was constructed after US and soviet forces made their marches from the west and east respectively. though i'm unsure of the reason that it was established, it was patrolled by east guards to keep refugees from leaving the economically impoverished east berlin, which had come under communist rule when people realized that the US and russia would not get along.
