It could be the timing, it could be bad valves, and it could be the plugs or the ignition system.

good luck.

You didn't say if it's backfiring through the intake or exhaust.

If it's backfiring through the intake, it could be timing. You've got a mechanism that advances the timing. Sounds like it might be advancing a bit soon, causing the backfires. As the RPMs build up, it handles the advanced timing better, so it stops backfiring. Your car will get better power and economy with a bit of advance, though too much causes backfiring.

If it's backfiring through the exhaust, it could be that you're pouring too much fuel into the motor that's not burning. When the fuel gets to the exhaust, the catalytic converter is igniting it, causing some backfire. When the RPMs build up and the fuel gets burned, the raw gas decreases so it doesn't burn in the catalytic converter. (A good guess if you are making decent power because that says the fuel is being burned in the motor, not in the converter)

Take it to a good diagnostic shop and ask them what the timing is like, and at which specific RPM and under which load condition. (Load is difficult to calibrate without special equipment that a good diagnostic shop has.) Might be, you're a bit too advanced in your timing, so retarding it by a couple of degrees will solve the backfiring, but this is something you want to discuss with whoever's doing the diagnosis. Might be, your fuel system is dumping too much gas into the motor, which they can tell by "reading" the spark plugs.

Talk to the guys there. They are knowledgeable and won't mind sharing their experience with you. Good luck!

if it is backfiring through the carb and through the tail pipe it could be a timing problem.check your wires, sparkplugs and firing order you could have a wire crossed

Turbo? .....spark plugs would be a good place to start. check your a/f ratio too if you can...may help you narrow it down. could be a number of things really.
