Llamas are gaining in popularity due to their many uses. Some llamas have fiber almost as fine as alpaca fiber, but they are cheaper, easier to train, and more managable than alpacas. They can trained and used to carry packs for hikers. They make wonderful guardians for sheep and goats. They will "buddy up" and be a companion for a lonely horse or other herd animal. They make good pets for people that want to own large livestock, but who don't have the experience to be safe with horses or cattle, since they are highly trainable and less likely to hurt someone than a horse or cow. They are a great animal for younger children to start out with if they want to learn how to train and show large animals. And yes, they are sometimes raised for meat in certain areas, but that is really only common in their native South American countries. As an added bonus, their droppings (known among llama breeders as "llama beans") is one of the best fertilizers available, and many serious gardeners are willing to PAY a llama owner to be allowed to go in the pasture and clean up the bean piles and keep the beans.

It is something to do with all those strange looking people playing Andean Pipes and drums who appeared in town centres all of a sudden a while ago. Sometimes they have a disco backing recording and amp with them. They have started wearing red indian feathers in my town in the last couple of weeks. They seem to like Christmas and Public Holidays. I suspect that they may be creatures I was told about as a child called 'Santa's little helpers', and that the Llamas have a similar function to the reindeer.

To be honest, I can't say I've noticed an incline the llama population! However, I will keep an eye open now!

Lol one escaped from a field near me the other day and ran into the grounds of a nearby high school. According to the local paper one of the teachers tried to lasso it while another rugby tackled it to the ground - while pupils were screaming and running around.
