The answer is YES. The sheep has to be slaughted to obtain their hide and fleece. Now once the sheepskin hides are taken from the sheep then the process of preparing the hide for manufacturers and ensuring the hides are up to export standard begins.

Woolskins are usually preserved with salt prior to being processed by tanneries. At the tannery the skins are processed in large vessels called paddles which vary in capacity from 3000 to 15000 litres. In contrast to hide processing, in woolskin processing mechanical action is kept to a minimum in order to minimise felting of the wool. Rotating blades on the paddles move the skins slowly and gently, and processing is performed at much higher float ratios (typically 20-35 litres of water per skin) than are used in hide processing.

Typically it takes about 10 working days for the skins to be tanned and finished ready to be cut into panels for ugg boots.

stop trying to convince people with this article...get the facts straight, most of this stuff isn't true, are you even getting this from the actual site? anyways, its not "treal sheepskin" its suede, that's why you have to be so careful w/ them, only the inside of the boots are made of sheep and that's the fur, besides shaving off sheep is actually GOOD for them. -and- if the boots aren't partially made out of suede, they already have to kill the sheep for meat, so now they are not wasting material and they prob. use dead animals not the ones that are still alive.

I never knew that, thanks for the information, but either way they still kill sheep for fleece. And you rarely kill the sheep to obtain hide and fleece, I know that for a fact. Sheep are also killed for meat, so they can use the fleece for uggs then.

The sheep is slaughtered for its meat. The hides are simply a by-product.

so your saying you have never eaten meat? your yelling at us for wearing uggs, which an animal had to be killed for but you dont care that an animal had to be killed for your dinner? give me a break. also chances are that when those sheep are killed their meat is used.. not like they just killed them for the fur only.
