Hi all...

Hubby and I will be taking a tour of the hospital soon, we will also be making out our birth wishes (I believe that is what it is called?).... I am pretty sure when you do that, it tells who will and will not be in the room....if I want drugs, etc...

My question is: Can I tell them by name who I do NOT want there? As in...when someone comes into the hospital and asks the receptionist for me/my room (after the baby is born), the receptionist will not let them know I am there or let them see me? I will ask when I take my tour, I was just wondering if anyone has asked this before.

The reason I am asking is because, this is a very special time for me and my family (hubby, parents, in-laws, etc)...And there are a few people who have most recently hurt us very very deeply and I do not want them to come to the hospital and take away any of my families joy during this time... We are looking forward to having this little one so much. Thanks.

HIPAA laws govern your privacy while in the hospital. It's one of the forms you'll be filling out during your pre-clinic visit. There will basically be 3 boxes you can choose from. The first will basically say "don't tell anyone I'm here" (but in legalese). The second will say "tell everyone who asks I'm here" and the third will say don't tell anyone except these people I explicitly name that I am here" with lines to write names on.

As for the birthing plan, I've recently read some articles in magazines that warn people not to be too narrow in your vision for your birth and be open to the possibility that things may change during your birth. For example, if you have your heart set on a specific song being played in the room at the exact moment your baby is born you're basically setting yourself up for disappointment because things like the birth of a baby can't be planned down to the most minute detail.

Im almost positive when you sign your papers that there is a new law known as the privacy act that keeps others from even knowing you are there. When they ask you to sign your papers ask them about the privacy act and how it works. Hope this helps and enjoy the birth of your new baby.

Yes, you can do this. There is this thing called the privacy act. It is supposed to prevent people from telling others that you are in the hospital. You can tell them to exclude whoever you want. Congratulations on your new baby.

I had the same issue. If the hospital offers that option you can. Most do. Best wishes!
