I attended public schools in St. Louis in the 50"s and 60's. Every year the elementary school kids put on a Christmas pageant, complete with Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus. There were shepards, a manger, 3 wise men, angels and assorted other characters. We sang "Silent Night" (holy night) and other carols. No one complained! In fact, they really liked it. Was this wrong?? Or, has political correctness today gone overboard?

I think that it has gone pretty far overboard. So much so, in fact, that our founding fathers wouldn't even recognize it here.

The thing that is wrong in schools is the kids aren't being heard. In my old elementary we'd have to go outside for our recess even if it's snowing and you cant see your hand. Kids would get frostbite, slip on ice, etc. Even the counseling teachers wouldn't listen to us. When we had problems they would say the obvious, not things that would really help us. What you should do is try to give kids independence and a voice to be heard. Now kids are getting Student Council in Junior Highs since it helps with self-esteem.

HELLO? It's a Holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ our savior. If they don't like it, they don't have to celebrate or even attend the pageants such as the one you describe. It's CHRISTMAS. Not Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Festivus, etc. Separation of Church and State say nothing about providing a religion free environment. Quite the opposite. You are free to practice any religion no matter how stupid it is. (Tom Cruise) The State will not endorse any one religion. What is Christmas then? Is it a holiday for Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Protestants, Baptists? It is for all Christians and not one particular faith. Therefor the State needs to get the hell out of our business and let us put up that Christmas tree and nativity scene.

Yes, it was absolutely, 100%, totally wrong to utilize public resources (such as a school) for a religious reason. Liberals are not against Christianity, they just feel compassion for the plights of those who aren't. Not wanting a State-sponsored religion is NOT the same as not wanting religion period. But, yes, in some ways PC has gone overboard over the last couple of years.

Nope it wasn`t wrong ! It`s when morals were prevalent in American culture & society ! We didn`t throw our new born babies into trash dumpsters , abortion was rarely if ever heard about , we didn`t shoot & kill our classmates , there were no gangs , there was no AIDS , teen pregnacy was as rare as Halley`s comet , there were no drive by shootings , you could walk your street at night with no fear of being attacked by a thief , rapist , or a child molester ? I could go on and on , but the fact of the matter for the Liberal Socialist Elite Crowd , is that when we allowed God into our lives , our schools , and our workplaces we were under God`s care ! If you are to blind to see or realize the path you Liberal Socialist PC Elite`s have taken this nation ; then that is why American society is in the gutter , or maybe I should say in the dumpster as it is today . You have asked that God not interfere in your lives , and you are reaping what you have sown , God is not mocked !!

Dude, my kid had to celebrate ORANGE AND BLACK day this year instead of Halloween.. or dare I say Harvest DAY...

PC is killing our civil liberties... what next.. what perceived threat? What is so threatening about Santa Claus or a classic song like Silent Night!

Merry Christmas..

it was fine for the time, but these days we are more sensitive to other people. you may think that's overboard, until someone is sensitive to something you feel strongly about. then you'll be glad society has changed and evolved over the last 50 years.
i know you may be nostalgic for that time, but if you remember, there was some problems too. we don't really want to go back there, do we?

you know after reading your question and answers to it.
I have changed my mind on the whole school voucher thing.
I was against it but if they are going to give the vouchers and we can use them at the school of our choice even Christian schools, then I am for it. Lets see how long it is till everyone is sending their children to Christian schools.

Where would we be today without the almighty ACLU. We are so much better off now that it is offensive to wish someone a merry Christmas. I have grown to hate the phrase happy holidays. PC has gone crazy. God forbid anyone be offended by anything. I probably just offended someone for using the word God.
