People will say economics...there are, however, more poor white people than poor black people.

Factors:
population density and the perceived anonymity it provides. Big city no one knows you, small town they know you and your family. So another correlation could be the # of major cities in that state. Rural Ohio is very safe as well, but Ohio has 3 major cities and a ton of second tier cities. As someone else stated, unemployment rates could be a factor, but I tend to believe that those people actually looking for work tend to not be criminals...desperation can do odd things though.

Finally, I think race could be a factor. I won't put up un-checked stats, but you can find evidence everywhere stating that while blacks make up under 20% of the population, they account for well over 50% of violent crime and/or firearm related crimes.

Well, lemme see ... POPULATION and population density. State economy and industry. Rates of unemployment.

A zillion other things.
_____________

Uh, per capita does not take into the account the fact that most of these states have essentially no big cities. Don't see Minnesota (also very "white") on the list, which has the biggest metro area in the upper Midwest (Minneapolis-St. Paul).
_____________

P.S. It is pretty racist - or at least stupid - to point out race as the first factor you can think of for accounting for less crime. Just because blacks commit more crime in the U.S. does not mean that they are *inherently* and *naturally* and *biologically* more corrupt *because of* their race. This is an enormous logical fallacy.

it is not proper who performed the race card first. the factor is that it substitute into/is performed. ''Why do whites have a undertaking with blacks now consciously questioning their intentions?'' I easily have a query, too: Why could everyone question the intentions of a finished team of human beings? the respond is they should not! in my view, i'm sick of ALL racists- not basically the white racists. they're all in basic terms as undesirable.

The main other factor is what type of crimes are committed and whether or not the person gets caught.

Whites are more likely to commit nonviolent crimes (i.e. embezzling) than violent crimes but a crime has still be committed.

I believe that the white culture is much less violent than the black and Hispanic cultures. Look at the incarceration rates for whites, blacks, and Hispanics for more evidence of this.

Also, a more homogeneous society results in less conflict and violence, which is why allowing 40 million immigrants, most of them non-European, into our country since 1965 has greatly increased conflict, lessened a sense of American identity and pride in the country, and caused increased disunity in our nation. As Pat Buchanan has said, our immigration policies since 1965 have caused a balkanization in the USA.

Looking at the states you listed, I think overall population plays a role as well. Fewer people, fewer crimes.

This question is gonna get slammed with stuff about racism. But honestly, you have a point. It seems like you are less likely yo get mugged in a white neighborhood than places like harlem. But that is probably because of living conditions, not race. Because trailer parks ain't exactly safe ether.
