Intermittent problems are the hardest to sort out.

To run, you need fuel, air and spark. To check for spark. pull the spark plug, stick it into the spark plug wire and lay it against the head. When you kick it over, you should see spark. (Might need a stick to press it against the metal for a good contact)

Fuel isn't so hard to check, either, but you could be having problems in several places. Could be a dirty jet in the carb, could be a plugged fuel filter or even a gas cap that's not venting. (If it's a bike that doesn't get regular use, the two-stroke mixture might have gummed up, requiring carb disassembly and cleaning.)

Air is easy- just remove the air filter and see if it starts. If so, you know what to replace.

You might want to get a repair manual for this quad. It'll have a troubleshooting section that will do you some good.

Enjoy the quad and the time you spend with your kids!

If you didn't winterize the bike (or long term storage) then the fuel has evaporated and created varnish on inner surfaces. More specifically even small deposits (of varnish) will make the carb malfunction. This is really a common problem for seasonal engines (like motorcycles, chainsaws, lawnmowers).

Next time add STA-BIL before long term storage:

But for this time, you will have to pretty much take the carb out or take the bike to a motorcycle shop.

There are few thing you can try but you will have to disassemble the carb and clean it out. I've done this few times but in the end they don't run right.

Good Luck.

Did you remember to turn the fuel on. If it's set to off (the lever is under the seat on the left side), he is just running the fuel out of the carb.

If that's not it, change the plug and check the fuel filter. You may also want to check the idle on the carb. If it cuts out when he lets of the throttle, it may be too low.
