ok, obviously an empty tank, or one with plastic fish doesnt need to be cleaned. real helpful. What I mean is - is there a self cleaning tank, or fish you can put in that eat waste (eg. like snails or something) that work well enough that I wont have to clean it out all the time.

Please for the sake of the fishes, DO NOT BUY AN AQUARIUM!! You are not ready to care for one at all. So the answer is no, there is not a self cleaning fish tank. No the fish that eat the waste also make waste. Ask yourself this one question. How long would you live in your closet if you ate in there, leaving the left overs in the floor with your poop and pee in there, with no one cleaning it up or even cleaning out the air so you could breathe? Not long and fish will suffer the exact same way until they die. So go get a stuffed animal for a pet. You will only have to toss it into the wash once a year.

Easy answer, one with plastic fish and plastic plants

Edit to add: again, no, there isn't a tank that doesn't need to be cleaned. What is it with absolute laziness? People want to get pretty fish to look at, but don't want to get off their butts for a water change! Fish and snails do not eat waste, they create MORE. There is no snail or fish out there that eats fish crap, and anything living you add to the aquarium will produce waste to add to the bioload. A properly cycled tank that is not overstocked needs a 10-25% water change once a week. That isn't hard.

The only thing that comes close to a tank that needs less maintenance, but still needs cleaning is the walstad style planted tank. But those are expensive to set up and a lot of work. If you are too lazy to want to clean a tank, creating a walstad planted tank is NOT for you!

An empty one.

If you add animals and plants and water, they will create waste and that waste has to be cleaned up.
Edit:
There aren't any fish that eat the waste of other fish. And tank maintenance isn't all that bad, just change out about 20% of water once a week, takes less than 5 minutes (unless you have a 500 gallon tank).

Yes. It's called a balanced aquarium, but it is almost impossible to achieve, especially in a small tank. It is where the detritus etc. is broken down and recycled as nutrients by bacteria in the gravel bed, algae are eaten by sucking fish and snails, and everything happens as nature intended.

no. there are filters that keep it cleaner but you cant get one that you dont have to clean. if you have a fish tank you are just gonna have to clean it sometimes if you want your fish to live. I dont think you can get around that
