I know there are plenty of conservative celebrities who put their money where their mouths were and ran for public office: Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood, Sonny Bono, and Fred Thompson come immediately to mind. For the life of me, I can't seem to come up with a single liberal celebrity who has run for office (and won) and actually put in the time and effort to actually do something.
Why don't the likes of Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover, etc. back up their talk with some action instead of jetting about the world promoting their "causes"?

Jerry Springer was Mayor before he became a celebrity, but that is a good call. And at least Al Franken is trying.

Can't say I remember saying that liberals have no business in politics, but I can definitely remember criticizing them for not actually leading by example. There is a difference.

I think your question is a bit puzzling. I can't think of any "liberal celebrities" right off the top of my head that have won, although I'm sure there are some; but I do think that the likes of Danny Glover, etc. do back up their talk with action and hard work. I don't think you have to be a politician to be influential and make positive changes in the world. Take a look @ Leonard DiCapprio's website for starters and see what he has been doing to tackle environmental issues. Perhaps the likes of these people (e.g. Al Gore) make an intentional decision to not run for public office because they believe they will be more effectual in the global community if they are not politicians.

Why does this matter? I am sure there have been but I am not interested in researching the topic. Why didn't Charlton Heston run for office? or John Wayne? Seriously, what would that prove? More Republican celebrities ran for office so therefore the Republicans are better? This is a childish observation... I have voted Republican and I am actually irritated by celebrities feeling entitled to run for office whether they are conservative or liberal. Just because you playe a president or war hero in a movie doesn't make you better prepared to be a real one. Bless the celebrities that you named for NOT running for any kind of office. And shame on the voters that were lulled by a glamorous name.

Celebrities often can do more to promote their causes outside of office. The highest paid official in the government is the President of the US. ($400k per year) Since they all make much more money than that and they are able to promote their ideas without being in office, then the only reason to run would be the lure of power. Liberals generally (not all of course) do not share this same lust as their conservative counterparts.
Personally I think politics should be practiced by those who have studied the law. You wouldn't go to Arnold Schwartzenegger for surgery. Why would you want him in office? Maybe, the lack of unqualified celebrity liberals in politics is exactly why we seem to be much better at it.

Some of the worst political Hacks are celebrities. Barbara Streisand and Rush Limbo, are alot alike in that they both spew off at the mouth, but dont run for office. That tells me that all they want to do is complain and stir up controversy and mess, but dont want to change anything for the better.

Is that why you love Ahnold in Cal? But isn't that unfair to put all into one category. Remember who had this famous YA quote? " I would prefer it if no one was to speak for me since I can take care of myself as I am an individual and do not want to be placed in a group." I wonder who said that? Yet does the exact opposite to everyone else.

I heard plenty of liberal celebrities claim that they would leave the U.S. in the event that George W. was to be re-elected. Well.... they're still here - and other than the usual Repub-bashing comments to the media they didn't do a darn thing to support their arguments.
I'm with you, I can't think of a single liberal celebrity who was ever elected into office, heck - I can't think of a single one who's even ran for office.
Like a lot of hot air blowers who just want to jump on the next big band wagon for publicity's sake those who spouted off then and those who are spouting off now about the upcoming elections are no more than that... wind bags who can't support their arguements with intellectual speech much less actually DO anything to support it.
