There is an electric device that senses when someone is present. Just the same as the proximity switches that motion lights use. When the signal is broken then it goes to a control box and it sends a signal to a solenoid that applies power to the door mechanism. Then the door opens, some may rely on a timer to keep the door open, others may use a pressure mat to know when people are through the door. Then a signal is sent to close the door and wait for another person to enter.

That is pretty basic, but it gives a general idea of how they work.

Electric Doors are cool. My father and I installed them on his 1954 Olds 88. They are really simple. You have an electric solenoid that attaches by cable or bar to your door latch. These solenoids have a receiver for a key fob when you hit the button it activates the solenoid and open the door latch. Now to make the door open you have a plunger installed in the door jamb that has a powerful spring in it so that when the latch is activated and opened the plunger pushes the doors open. Then you just grab the door and open it.

Automatic door locks/windows? You need to be more specific.
