Only Eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jews score higher than average, about 112 IQ is the norm. The usually score best on the language part of the test, and they have produced a massive amount of Nobel prize winners.

Middle Eastern Jews score normally.

I'm going with natural selection, as about 70% of your IQ score is inherited, and gene dependant. Maybe they have a higher liklihood of recessive genes for IQ being inherited because they tend to marry other Jews and they area small population. Or that the Jews that first moved into Eastern Europe were just smarter on average, a founder effect.

That's a generalization, but it also has some merit, as many generalizations do. Thanks for qualifying the question with the the words "on average."

I have two theories:

1) Jewish people are, on average, more educated. Educated parents are better at providing good cognitive stimulation for their children at an early age, which makes them intelligent. The children of educated people also pursue higher education in greater numbers.

2) Is it possible that over the course of getting kicked around for 6000 years or so, the Jewish people experienced some kind of accelerated natural selection, wherein only the smartest of them survived all sorts of hardships?

It is deeply ingrained in Jewish culture that family is a MAJOR component. The stronger the family is, the smarter the children are raised. Compare that to most other cultures where that main center building block is absent and I think the answer become obvious.

Another viewpoint,,, if you believe in the bible,,, is that they are God's chosen people. I think anyone God chooses to be special to himself will without a doubt show some sort of specialness when compaired to others.

I don't know about being smarter, but they are certainly a lot more confident race. Who else would cut off a part of there penis before they knew how big it was going to be.

The most important thing to realize is that variation WITHIN any group is MUCH greater than variation BETWEEN groups.

Thus, most likely any difference in average is due to any number of irrelevant factors, including sampling error, testing inconsistencies, and even things like differences in economic level.

Humans are a single race. There's no significant difference between any races, ethnicities, religions, or other completely irrelevant grouping.

Where is your evidence?

Is the average intelligence in Israel (predominantly Jewish!) where presumambly they have the usual cross-section of professions, careers and unskilled labouring jobs, greater than in, say, the United Kingdom, where Jews are a minority?

Generally there is no difference in IQ's but culturally faithful Jews are raised with a set of principles they follow rigorously which provides them with a different perspective on things which many people see as more intellectual when actually it is just socialized motives and drives.

Jews aren't smarter or stupider than anybody else...it's just that in Jewish culture, a big emphasis is put on academics.

Only in your estimation my friend. Nothing wrong in giving other groups in the world the same chances and benefit of the doubt. Do so with an open mind, and I guarantee you the results would educate your mind..
