I have two groups of friends, and my husband and I want to have a party at our place but haven't announced it to anyone yet. Already there's some discussion of getting together at someone elses house, but it will be a small affair and we won't get to see everyone (I know this is unrealistic anyway). But the idea is just being thrown around. How do I not hurt people's feelings but still express my thoughts?

announce it ASAP and get the ball rolling...
invite everyone including the other friends having a party. Just tell them that you guys have been kicking the idea around for a while and would love it if they could come.

Why don't you just get in touch with the person or people who have been talking about getting together and see if you could maybe merge parties and have it at your place? Or you could do a really fun thing where about 4 or 5 of you host parties, and the groups of friends migrate from house to house, kind of like the block parties they have back east sometimes. Each host house could have a different fun theme. One of you could do a sort of elegant wine-and-cheese thing, and then another could do a rowdy margarita fiesta theme, and then another could do a Mardi Gras masquerade, and so on. When you end up at the last house, you stay and ring in the new year there. This way there will be no hurt feelings, everyone can have fun together, and no one person will be stuck with the burden of having to host a party.

Well, why not just say..."we were thinking we would have a party this year". The only thing is that you have now waiting until after your friends have invited you to their house. Maybe you should go along with things this year and just announce that next year's party is at your place!

Go ahead and tell everyone that you had planned on having a party at your house so you could see all of your friends. Thats what i would tell them.
