the oil is going somewhere either your engine is leaking it or it is burning it.
check all of the gasket and around the oil filter to make absolutely sure there is no leak. if there is no leak then the motor is burning the oil (slowly, so you don't see blue smoke coming out of the exhaust)
the manufacturer usually has a specification for how much oil consumption is acceptable. for example, in my subaru anything less than 1qt every 1000 miles is considered to be ok
if you are within this specification, then you are fine, don't worry about it

Check the seal on your oil pan- you should put a new one on there every time you change your oil, and if it isn't torqued correctly (too much OR too loose) you can slow-drip from there. If it is an older engine, you may also have a leak by your rings where there is in fact oil burning. If it's a half-quart a month and you stay on top of it, it's not a huge deal. If it's more, it';s only going to get worse, so you'll need to fix it or ditch it.

What kind of car is this??? This really matters. Need more info. In general, when the car is cold, rub your finger around the inside of your tailpipe. If the car is burning oil, then your finger will be black and oily. If it's not, then what could be happening is that your car is running too rich. The extra gas is thinning out your oil and causing it to burn. Over time, this is a big problem, as thinned down oil does not protect your engine. It would help me alot to know what kind of car this is. Feel free to E-mail me, if you like, with more info!!!!!!

How many miles on the car? Probably burning the oil, could be leaking while driving, may be being inhaled due to poor PCV valve. Probably burning the oil and not noticing the smoke.

It's burning it, if it doesn't leak and yet the level goes down, it's burning the oil off. It may not smoke now, but it will start soon. Your piston rings may be starting to wear out and your getting blow by and it's burning it off during combustion.
