It certainly is. I was in Baghdad, Iraq in 2004-2005. I worked out of the Presidential Palace. I never saw so many armed people walking around. I had two weapons, an M16A2 rifle and a Beretta M9 pistol. Some people had three!

There were soldiers from a couple dozen countries with their Steyr AUGs (Australians), L85A2s (British), Beretta rifles (Italian), AK-47s (Iraqis, Georgians, Ukrainians, Polish, Romanians, Czechs & c). I even saw some American civilians with RPKs.

I have to say that I like being in an environment like that. Everybody got along. There were no problems. Everybody respected everybody else.

And armed society is indeed a polite society.

Not really. When I lived in an area of the world where the men carried guns, I saw no affect on their politeness. I would say some even got a bit more cocky (but that might be more Freudian than anything else).

I remember reading an article written by an anthropologist who was comparing the relatively polite southern US culture to the comparably impolite northern one.
Their conclusions where that in the south, it was socially acceptible to confront (even violently) someone who had been disrespectful to you. Whereas in the north, the culture was much more anti-violence.
In other words, people in the south were more polite because they knew there were reprocussions if they weren't. In the north, no one cared because they knew no one could/would do anything about it.

So 'armed' doesn't really make things more polite, as no one suggests shooting people who are rude. But it does lend to the general concept of people being empowered to defend their own rights and honor.

Put a sign outside your house that says: "there are absolutely no guns in this house" Also, ask the cops in Spain how they feel when a bomb goes off next to them. That will make you jumpy as well. Getting rid of the guns will only satisfy you for s few minutes. Liberal busy bodies are never satisfied and move to the next thing to control almost immediately.

Any society that is a liberal society is impolite. Conservative societies value family, and therefore appreciate an heirarchy of authority; which is why they are polite. It is a side issue that Liberal socities are also 'anti-gun' and conservative societies are 'pro-gun.' Its about the fundamental philosophy inherent within the society's makeup.
So, I agree with the premise of your query, but believe the cause of this disparity is due to the society's core values.

I don't know if it's any more polite. But if the possible repercussions of what you say can mean you get shot you aren't as likely to say something that can be taken as an insult.

That's why I don't like the fact people in here are allowed to block access to questions or E-mail. There are many in here who are latent terrorists. They say things not for the sake of producing dialog and discussion but to create hate and discontent. They hide behind blocks and E-mails not allowed and say things which would get them hammered even in polite company.

Free speech means not only are you allowed to say what you want to but that others are allowed to say what they want back to you in response.

When one suspects or knows that another may well be armed, politeness prevails.
DO NOT PUT ONE CENT INTO THE SCATOLOGY THAT HORRORWOOD, Califartnia has put out in films !
Simply ask yourself this question. 'Do I want to be rude to someone who might be 'packing'?

Unfortunately I live where many people carry firearms and it just gives them a license to bully people without.

Englanda you're right on the money.

Ever drive in Miami? No one honks their horn. Why? Because you can get shot for it. I think people are generally more polite when they can get shot for being impolite.

Usually, people are afraid of each other when all are armed.
