(a/6 - a) + (6/a - 6)

Is it 1 or -1?
Or is it (a + 6/6 - a) or (a + 6/a - 6)?

= -1

(a/6 - a) + (6/a - 6)

is NOT the same as

(a/ [6 - a] ) + (6/ [a - 6] ) = -1 (as given earlier)

which is, I think, what you mean .
PLEASE use bracket for all the denominator

(a/6 - a) + (6/a - 6)
[a( a-6) + 6(6-a)]/ ( a-6)(6-a)
a^2 -6a + 36 -6a/ -a^2 + 12a -36
a^2 -12a + 36/ -a^2 + 12a -36
=-1
