I think smiling is a normal reaction when someone scolds you. What might be better is to make sure you're listening to what is being said (that doesn't mean to take it personally, just to listen). If your teacher asks you why you're smiling, just tell him or her, that you're listening and trying to be open to the criticism they're telling you (in this way they know they are being taken seriously).

That's great that you've learned the lesson and recognize that you did something wrong. That's all that needs to happen. You don't have to make excuses or apologize for doing something wrong, just acknowledge it and correct the mistake (taking responsability) is what needs to happen.

Sounds like you're not using your ears, eh? I was the same way when I went through elementary and I saw some pre-teens and teens in junior high smile.
Never make excuses; nobody likes being told excuses, just the truth. And don't appoligize; saying things like sorry has no meaning and can get repeatative. Recognize what you are being told by listening intently. Then, do what it is you were told to do so everything is okay.

Depends on why I'm getting scolded and who's doing it. If it's my parents h*ll no! If it's someone like my older brother I burst out laughing. I think its pretty much a normal reaction depending on how much respect you have for the person.

One time had an officer in the army give me a thorough thrashing. I smiled the whole time.

When he asked what I was smiling about, I just said, "Sir, you finally grew a pair, you might make a good officer after all."

I do it too! [I'm glad I'm not the only one.] My dad says that it's a sign of disrespect but sometimes I can't help it. To me, it's better then to stand there with an attitude while you are getting scolded at.

There were times when I was a kid when my mama would be chewing me out and I would smile and almost laugh at her. The result would be that instead of a chewing out I got a butt whoopin.

I have gotten better about it but somtimes it is hard.

I just sit there with a straight face and take it. Smiling only makes it worse.

I start laughing on purpose whenever someone tries to lecture me. It pisses my dad off every time.
