Here's how it started, My 5 month old was breaastfeed until 4 months of age (no problems) then I introduced formula and he started having painful gas, so I switched his regular formula to Enfamil gentlelease specifically for babis with gas. The painful gas still continued. I was 1/2 breastfeeding and 1/2 supplementing with the formula. I tried Mycolin drops, didnt work. Now Am trying gripe water in hopes of some relief. He recently begun solids hoping maybe peas, etc will help his digestion (fiber) but now in addition to painful gas, his poop is hard and really hurts him. I cant win.
So I'm confused as to what to do. I go back to work in two weeks and am hoping to find an answer. By the way, I started him on formula because he was breastfeeding ALL DAY, and I couldnt breastfeed him 24 hours a day.

I had a very similar experience but my baby was a little younger. I started my daughter on regular formula when she was a month old cause I just couldn't get the hang of breastfeeding. She seemed to have a lot of gas too so we used Mylicon and her pediatrician switched her to Gentlease too. She would have periods of painful screaming everynight that lasted for hours with no way to calm her down. Her poop took the consistency of peanut butter so her pediatrician decided to send her poop for an analysis and it came back that she had blood in her stool. She was put on Nutramigen for babies with milk allergies and advised me to wait to start her on baby food for about another month to let her tummy heal. Since she has been on this formula she has been fine, she eats food fine and has normal poop. She was tested for food allergies at 6 months and found that she was in fact allergic to milk and eggs. She has to have an epi-pen because her allergy is considered so severe. I think you should talk to your doctor about Nutramigen and try it!!

MY son did the same thing only he was on soy because of a milk allergy. It was so bad we ended up in the hospital due to the constipation. He was ripping his rectum apart trying to get it out. It was not hard and dry but was very thick and sticky. I was recommended to switch him to Alimentum which still didn't help much. I by chance found a similar product from Enfamil called Nutramigen. It's the best stuff ever. Within a day he was a different baby. He filled 6 diapers that day, he was so backed up. He hasn't been gassy or constipated since and has a least one good sized bowel movement a day. It's pretty pricey at 27 a 16 ounce powder can but it is a miracle worker. Good luck and trust your mommy instincts. What the Doctor says isn't always right. And sometimes you need to explore things on your own.

First, at 5 months he shouldn't be breastfeeding 24 hours a day. Perhaps you can speak with your doctor or a lactation consultant or public health nurse about what IS normal.

Second, it sounds like he has a food allergy to the formulas so you may want to consider just breast feeding, and pump while you are at work. Not as convenient but he can't continue with these symptoms.

Third, if he's constipated it should clear up if you stop the formula. If it doesn't, you may want to try some prune sauce.

Please, speak with your doctor about this.

Ask the doctor if you can give him apple juice or prune juice and double check that you are preparing the formula properly.
Give 2 oz of water every couple of hours.
Avoid solids like applesauce, bananas and rice cereal. Instead try oatmeal, prunes and pears.
Try some baby yoga 5-6 times, 3-4 times a day. 1) Massage his tummy in a clockwise spiral (speed up digestion and elimination). 2) Grab his lower legs and touch knees to belly (relieve gas). 3) Give him warm bath.
See the pediatrician if things dont improve in the next couple of days.

Please do not give that baby apple juice if the baby is too young! Try washing your hands and putting a little of baking soda on your finger and put it in the baby's mouth; gas is gas. Put a teaspoon of Karo syrup at the bottom of the the bottle for the constipation. Not sure if you are going to find it but something else for the gas is Deewee. It comes in a little small brown bottle.
