I don't leave any food but yet I don't lick the plate either. If I find myself that hungry I go for seconds.

depends on what I have---if it's really delicious, then I will eat evrything on my plate but if it's something not too desirable, I'll scrape the rest into the trash can

It's proper, if you like, to break off a small piece of bread, and use the fork to "sop" any gravy or such.
It's not improper to leave a bit, but be careful that you don't leave so much that the host or hostess assumes that it was not appetizing.
