Oh yeah. I remember searching the woods across the street from a sweet shoppe where everyone threw the empty bottles. Three bottles (6 cents) could get you a 5 cent candy bar and a Bazooka bubble gum...

Yeah, my brothers and I as kids would hang around the little store near home and have a nickel in our pocket and sit there and drink a soda for 3 cents ( 5 cents minus 2 cents deposit)! Great times!!

back when I was nine yrs old me and a friend would go around the neighborhood and collect bottles and take them to the grocery store and turn them in just so we can buy candy with the money and also just to go swimming

Yup , and the quart bottles were worth a nickle . I used to bring a few back and trade them in for Mallo cups :)). We still have deposits on beverage containers here in New York ...
