I have been very happy with my Hoover wind tunnel, bagless, upright version - for carpets and furniture. With animal hair I think that it is critical that whatever you chose is bagless, so that you can empty it frequently and that you have good attachments for upholstery. Mine came with a mini-rug beater attachment that is very good for couches and chairs. I even used this on one of my dogs - but I trained him to be comfortable with this from when he was a puppy. I really wish that the cat would tolerate the same....

In my opinon, Kirby is the best vacuum cleaner. However, if you don't want to spend thousands on a vacuum cleaner, my mom has a Bissell Powerforce Bagless ($49 at Wal Mart) that works pretty good on pet hair.

Use an upright one with a beater bar that can be adjusted manually. Forget the cylinder sort they are useless. I've had cats and dogs and I can tell you that the most powerful upright will win every time. On stairs however you need to use a wet rubber glove to collect all the hairs into a ball and then you can pick them up with the cleaner. Good luck!

I have a Dyson DC14 animal and 2 dogs. It picks up all the dog hairs with no trouble.

Dyson! The ball, or probably any of their models! Don't waste your money on any other vacuum.
