I am in the U.K. Is it just salt and grit or what? What am I walking and driving on? Thanks!

It's salt from the mines in Cheshire.

Its just all the nasty film that comes off the road when you drive on it....its small particles of dirt, glass, rock particles, water and anything else that is left on a paved road.
When you have been driving in the rain for a while and then your car dries up the grit is that layer of film left on your car that has splashed up off the tires onto the body and underneath your vehicle.

It's mostly sand, with some salt added for ice-melting purposes — at least, that's what it is here in Canada. Probably the same there.
