A silent movie from 1923 comes to mind. "Safety Last!" starring Harold Lloyd has a great scene where he climbs up the side of a building. He did all of his own stunts.
An old Seattle theater was showing it a couple of years ago. Everyone in the crowded theater was sitting on the edge of their seats. Each time Harold feigned a near-fall, everyone gasped, and then sighed.
It's really saying something when a movie 80 years old can still have that effect!
