I come from a poor background. My father was a factory worker.

I worked my way through college with a full time job. I don't hold it against anyone who had parental support. I think I came out ahead because I took my classes very seriously because I was paying for them out of my own pocket. I graduated with honors - very nearly a 4.0 - at a top university.

Being poor - even to the point of going without heat in a northern state - really lit a spark and a flame in my life that still burns today!

I am just thankful that we live in a free country where some poor kid like I was who wants to make it good can.

Yes. People work to give themselves and their children better lives. If you became independently wealthy tomorrow, would I be owed any of that?

On a related note, one thing that keeps many poor people from bettering their situation is that programs intended to help the poor just end up hurting them.

The minimum wage, for example, is a great concept but once you study some economics, you'll find that it only hurts the very people it's designed to help and benefits no one.

One thing I can't stand is when people think they're entitled to other people's money, or that rich people should be taxed more.

If my grandfather made billions of dollars and passed his fortune down to me, you do not deserve any of it. It is his money that he worked for and can dispose of how in any way he desires. You don't have any claim to any of it.

If I want to give some to you, that's fine. Nothing gives you the right to use force -i.e the government- to take my money out of my pockets and put it in to yours.

By the way, for what it's worth, I'm a middle-class nerd. I'm not saying this from a privileged perspective.

I guess you are not aware that many of the "rich" started out dirt poor and worked 24/7 to become rich. That is the way it works all over the world.

Of course its not. But ones who work hard value so much more of the little things inlife while the prudes have their noses up their buts and make such a big deal and worry about stupid crap you are above. Who has the riches now?

Yes, it is fair. Someone worked hard to make the money in some generation. I will leave my kids with a lot more than I got, not because my parents didn't work hard but because they chose to have 5 kids, and we chose to have 2. mine will defiantly not be wealthy by no means but they will be able to pay off everything they owe, which will not be that much. They will still have to work.

The Land of Opportunity,

Is now the land of social policy and government managed resources... a kinder, gentler America that we so desperately need?

What we need; is more higher paying jobs--the rest follows.

Liberals like to make their own decisions.

Rich people have to work just as hard as poor, if not harder. If you are not rich and desire to be, make it happen. That's what's wonderful about America. Everyone has equal opportunity.

I guess it isn't fair, but should it be corrected? Can it be corrected? In my experience, happiness in life comes from success. You can't buy success, and the harder you work for it the more enjoyable it is. IMHO, the less fortunate are more fortunate, they have a bigger cup to fill and will receive more pleasure in filling it. They also tend to be smarter and more appreciative of what they can potentially do.

Would you rather be spoiled, or capable but less fortunate? I'd take B anyday.

Yes, when you consider that part of what we work for is to make a better life for our children.

What's the alternative? Have the government take everything a person has earned, so it doesn't go to the kids?

Everyone has a very good chance to make it in our society. But being consumed with jealousy and resentment only hurts one's chances.
