The mitochondria's MAJOR functions is to produce ATP (energy). The rest of the functions are as follows: signaling, cell differentiating, cell deaths and controles the cell cycle and cell growth. They play a role in the aging process.
The organelle has particular compartements that carry out specific functions.
The Major functions in a list:
Regulation of the membrane potential
Apoptosis-programmed cell death
Glutamate-mediated excitotoxic neuronal injury
Cellular proliferation
Regulation of the cellular redox state
Heme synthesis
Steroid synthesis
Mitochondria possess their own genetic material, and the machinery to manufacture their own RNAs and proteins (see: protein synthesis). A published human mitochondrial DNA sequence revealed 16,569 base pairs encoding 37 total genes, 24 tRNA and rRNA genes and 13 peptide genes. The 13 mitochondrial peptides in humans are integrated into the inner mitochondrial membrane, along with proteins encoded by genes that reside in the host cell's nucleus.

carry out the oxidation reactions of the respiratory chain.
ATP synthase, which generates ATP in the matrix.
Specific transport proteins that regulate metabolite passage into and out of the matrix.
Protein import machinery.

Function: expand the surface area of the inner mitochondrial membrane, enhancing its ability to generate ATP
and last but not least
-the matrix:
Function.:matrix is important in the production of ATP with the aid of the ATP synthase contained in the inner membrane. The matrix contains a highly-concentrated mixture of hundreds of enzymes, in addition to the special mitochondrial ribosomes, tRNA, and several copies of the mitochondrial DNA genome. Of the enzymes, the major functions include oxidation of pyruvate and fatty acids, and the citric acid cycle

Mitochondria are the locations where aerobic respiration happens. This process completes the breakdown of glucose to release energy for the cells to use.
The glycolysis stage happens in the cytoplasm, then the pyruvate passes into the mitochondrion. The Citric Acid Cycle (or Krebs cycle) happens in the gel-like matrix that fills the interior of the mitochondrion. The electron transport chain processes happen on the folds of the inner membrane.
