You maybe referring to the Nike billboard slogan that ran during the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta. With the host country set to win a record number of golds and medals, seemed like heady times. Looking back, with athlete after athlete stripped of all medals and honor makes you wonder if there will be any Olympic spirit driving the 2008 competitors or is it only gold? I just happened to see the documentary on the 1972 Munich Olympics which of course were dominated by the deaths of the Israeli contingent. Besides the athletes who left the village and gave up their chance at gold, I also noticed a good number of bronze and silver "losers" who genuinely congratulated the gold medalist and were happy with their best effort.
Looked to me like 3 champions up there on the podium.

Your point exactly is what, because after all the training and sacrifices they have earned that silver. Similar to the marathon where two women were on there knees clawing their way to the finish line. Respectively winning both fourth and fifth. It was paved through hard work and sheer bloody mindedness. Oh yeah and ask you self how many of those golds were won through drugs.

No, you don't lose gold because you never had it in the first place. You win whatever you win.

The reward should be the journey, and the outcome is just the icing on the cake. In other words, if you train hard and dedicate yourself, and put forth your best effort, then that is all that you can do, and if it means winning a medal, no matter what color, then that is just a bonus.

Is it not the taking part in something of more value when you look back, rather than the coming second and winning something..? Satisfaction is a human instinct and in our quest to get to the top we overlook certain things in life...
I'm English & we always love a loser !
