He retired because he was smart enough to have a vision for his life after football.
He was a veteran running back in good shape, and wanted to keep it that way. He was always conscious of not wanting to turn out as a beaten down 35-year-old walking with a limp. It didn't help, either, that he despised Tom Coughlin, and he may have returned to the Giants had a coaching change been made.
I can't believe Tiki gets slammed for "quitting." All he did was make a career change, and that's his choice. Last I looked, he's not accountable to anyone for making such a decision. He didn't demand a trade, or hold out of training camp - he simply decided to take his life in a different direction.

NYG fan here - he had no heart; he wanted to be a TV star more than he wanted to play football - even if playing 2-3 more seasons would have put him among the all time greats. He truly was one of the 2-3 most versatile RB's in history - walking away when he was still putting up 2,000 yards from scrimmage per year just shows he had no heart.
Jacobs is a beast, but as he showed repeatedly Sunday night, he can't catch the ball. That's why Barber was so very dangerous.

He retired because he wanted to do TV. Let's face it, he's a good looking well spoken guy which can't be said about a lot of ex-footballers now on the tube. I don't blame him, he put his time in and announced he was going to retire before the season even started. He doesn't owe his whole life to the Giants.

I think you are close. He was an aging running back who takes a lot of hits. He was successful the past few seasons, but the longer he stayed the more risk he had of sustaining a serious injury. I think he wanted out while he was still in good health. I don't think there is anything wrong with it either, Barry Sanders did it.

I think your boyfriend is right. I also think Tiki wanted to get on national TV so he could irritate the largest possible audience with his smug, self-satisfied attitude.

Tom Coughlin drove him out.
Whether he lost his passion for the game, or just couldn't play for a tyrant, Tom was the X-factor.
In some ways he also pulled a "Robert Smith" or "Barry Sanders," retiring in their prime before injuries took a hold.

Tom Coughland!
He left because he had 3 more years working under a man he couldn't stand. He got out still healthy, but I agree, too soon, he'll never make the hall of fame with his career, too many fumbles, and left at the top of his game.
