Follow the instructions on the following page, and make sure you follow them precisely as it means editing your system registry file. (I know it says it's for Windows Vista, but please believe me, it works for Windows XP too.)

Go to your computer manufacturer's website, and look for something along the lines of "support" or "drivers." Typically, big-name computer vendors use standardized hardware, so as long as your machine isn't custom-built, you'll be able to download and reinstall the drivers for your dvd drive. Look for the DVD(or disk drives, if that's not listed) category, and download any device drivers that are offered. You can probably skip the software that is offered, as the fact that it's missing in the device manager suggests a complete driver failure.
If this does not work, open up your computer and ensure that the ribbon cable and connection to the power supply are intact.

Bios will stumble on it the two way, yet living house windows won't know a cd/dvd force whether this is a sole force, yet set to slave. whether it fairly is no longer a sparkling force, and purely stopped working with none tinkering, replace the ribbon cable, and if nonetheless no luck, time for a sparkling force.

You could try running the "Add New Hardware" wizard and see if Windows picks it up? Sometimes it works! LOL
