In Love - connotates passion, desire, excitement, unbriddled joy.

In my opinion, you can be in in love with your children, life, music etc...

Love - connotates stability, unconditionality, commitment, patience, kindness & maturity.

Ideally, I would want to love & be in love for the rest of my life, the position I extremely lucky to be in atm.

However, I know of many successfully happy relationships which are built on love rather than passion and are fully commited. (For eg. Arranged marraiges, mental illness etc.)

Well, some of that difference is apparent & explained -- when you're "in love" with someone, and they're not even aware of it... it's an overwhelming feeling, that can make a teenager's heart just melt-away when someone walks by, that they love so deeply they feel they're doing to die right there, if eye contact is made. Of course, they're not actually "loving" them.

Loving is the verb of closeness and caring. Taking care is love, whether it's a pet, an elderly person or with some men, an antique car. You can handle something lovingly, and when it's a special someone that gentleness still applies. Tenderness. That's not just a word, when you feel it.

You can love someone, when you're in love. But, when you love someone -- it might not be returned.

The English word love has multiple connotations, depending on the context. It makes it hard to convey in few words in English

Humans love in multiple ways, as many have said above.

The being "in love" form of love is better conveyed by the Greek term "eros" (the romantic version of the sentiment), whereas loving a family member would better conveyed by the term "storge."

The love of a friend would be expressed by "philia" (as in Philadelphia (the city of brotherly love) - now that's a misnomer if there ever was one. Don't EVER go to an Eagles game without wearing green. You will NOT come out alive. LOL! )

Loving someone can between any two. Students love their teacher, followers love their leaders and so on. Being in love can be the feeling two people have about each other.

Love- an intangible concept.
Loving someone- I love my daughters and my close friends. I would do anything for them.
Being in love- one loses all sense of reality as your reality revolves around that one person. They occupy every moment of your waking life.
When you see them your heart misses a beat
You smile that smile that lights up your whole being when you see them and are with them- That is being in love. Totally different emotion.

Being in love is usually the feeling you have at the beginning of the relationship. The feeling of not being hungry and floating on air and so happy just to be with him or talk to him. This passes after the newness wears off. Then you are left with the unconditional love. It is just part of nature. IE:...you can love your mother but you are not in love with her...right?

Yes, like many have said you love your family and "may" be in love with your partner/spouse. Although, truly I don't believe most people actually are. Those that say "in love" is the initial feeling that wears off, that's not "in love", that's INFATUATION. You may still love the person, but being "in love" does not wear off! If you are truly with the person you should be with, you always want to be with them, talk to them, always think of them before yourself, always want to do something nice for them, make them laugh, etc.

Interesting Q!
I think of being in love as that initial, head over heels thing. Loving someone is a more permanent / unconditional thing.
