As is being pointed out, there is a little flaw in your proposal, that being it wouldn't prevent speeding in areas with limits below 70mph, which are also where the real risks and dangers from speeding are, town and residential roads.

Incidentally cars sold in Japan for their home market do have speed limiters fitted. If I remember correctly it's 180kmh around 118mph so still plenty of scope to go a bit quick without going totally mental.

that's some really crappy logic - seriously.

People have the choice to speed, or to do the speed limit. By putting a governor on a car to limit the speed, you are subjecting your will on other people. That limits their freedom of choice. Sure, they can choose to break the law, but at the same time, with that choice, they also accept the consequences of getting a speeding ticket if they get caught.

Accidents aren't caused by speed itself, they're caused by people who cannot handle the speed. Nascar drivers will go 170 mph all day long, and not have accidents, but some idiots will crash at 30mph when they run a stopsign, or are too stupid to realize the roads are icy and their 4wd SUV can't stop, or decide their cell phone is more important, or fail to use turn signals when changing lanes.

Sorry that old chestnut has been tried in America , they just take them of , heavy vehicles have always had guvnors fitted the same thing 5 years ago it was reinforced again how many heavies have passed you doing 70mph or more. plus the fact it is very dangerous the only way you can govern engine speed it to fix its maximum revs to about 3000 rpm, Imagine that you are in a dangerous situation and need to speed out of it and when you thrust you foot on the throttle it does not respond only very slowly. we have all been there FRIGHTENING

It would be ridiculous to see all types of vehicles, with governors, doing 70 mph. I suspect most fines are levied on cars speeding in urban and 60 mph limits. You would find a Bugatti Veyron with a 15 year old banger up its backside and you can guess what would happen when the Bugatti braked.

I think requiring everyone to take an I Q test would go a lot farther in reducing accidents. If people had to demonstrate a positive I Q it should eliminate about half of the idiots on the road.

Great idea, one small draw back. Inappropriate speed kills not speed by itself. If speed killed then we would expect to see carnage at the formula one races.
Volvo have a system that works of gps that limits the cars speed in different areas, so for example if you are in a 30 zone the car is limited to 30.
Ja.

Speeding on the expressway or other limited access roads isn't much of a problem. Its nitwits barrelling through neighborhoods, major surface roads, and city streets that are dangerous. A governor would have little or no effect in those cases.

To stop accidents you could tie up people that don't know how to drive and throw them under a train. Anyone with a clue knows who causes accidents. Speeding doesn't cause accidents, people that drive beyond their abilities at ANY speed is what causes them.

No crashes?

So nobody has every crashed at under 70mph...

That's an interesting statistic...
