In a case like that its referring to the fact that the media and companies make this a standard.

She's speaking of how commercials and advertisements make it look like all women should look like that.

Commercially driven in general means that whatever the statement is referring to is because its good for business to be that way.

"She condemns it as a hopeless striving for unobtainable ideals of conventional beauty, culturally sanctioned and commercially driven."

conventional beauty = what is generally accepted as beauty throughout a society

culturally sanctioned = what is honored as beauty within a specific culture

commercially driven = what is portrayed as beauty by business and advertising. The type of beauty which sells products and encourages the buyer to strive to obtain the same ideal of beauty.

commercially driven = money driven

That explanation you received was very wordy. I think it's saying, "We cannot be beautiful as we are because our culture and the media promotes youth and beauty.

This something I've been thinking about . . . People are going to all ends to be young and beautiful. They have no qualms to go under the knife and suffer pain or disfigurement, and sometimes death to to attain the culture of today's society. In addition, senior citizens are becoming less respected citizens in our society.
