You'll probably get a lot of different kinds of answers for this one brother Mike.
I read your question on the way out and pondered what you were sharing. One thing that really came to me was that the Lord as God DID come to die. But His death was not as a way to escape anything as most suicide victims. His was not one of a suicide bomber with the twisted thinking of Islam.. where they are told that they have so much awaiting them in heaven.... all the virgins and young boys for the sexual fulfillment.
The Lord's death is not even on the same wavelength. We know brother that our Lord's death was one that He knew would happen. He came to die for three major reasons.
There was the matter of sin and man's separation from God because of it. So as our Lamb He died to be our substitute thus satisfying God's righteous requirements... bringing man to once again stand without fear and condemnation before God. The Lamb's perfect blood cleanses the imperfect sinner.. thus making the sinner a son:)
But this was just the tip off the iceburg. His status in death as the brass serpent dealt with satan, the old serpent and this serpentine poision that man got into him due to sin.
I love this one the best brother.. that our Lord died as the grain of wheat. Because unlike the two other statuses this one gives God His heart's desire. This one gives Him the many sons who are conformed to the Image of His Son Jesus Christ. By Christ dying to release His life as the Grain of wheat.. He has produced the many grains.. us....
Today we are like the blended grains that are a meal offering for the Father's delight and enjoyment. We have the grounded grains that are blended together with the oil ( Holy Spirit). Its amazing that this status as the Grain of wheat will accomplish God's heart desire and cause us to not just be adopted but BORN of God. " that which is born of SPirit is spirit"
We are the receivers of this Divine Life that Christ died to release. Now we are the children of God.. who will grow in His life to be the sons of God and be His heirs in glory.
So do they measure up to the Lord's death. no:)
I think even satan tried to get the Lord to take His own life as he tempted Him on the Highest place on the temple. Telling the Lord to cast Himself down and the angels will catch Him.
The source of all suicide is satan. The Lord had no intention of remaining dead. He rose again:) He died and we live because of Him:) Our true life is hid with Christ in God.
Very very interesting perspective brother Mike

EDIT
The choice to be martyred is not really about our life or death.. the real choice is whether we deny the Lord's name or not. :) If denying Him means Our death, what will it matter. He is our Life. Outside of Him there is nothing. I believe that any martyr saw their lives as nothing compared to their Lovely Lord. " for to me to live is Christ and to die is gain" But to save our lives and deny Christ is the worst kind of way to live... my heart on this...

True suicide is not technically simply causing your death. Suicide is self MURDER. Slight difference there. People jumped out of the twin towers as they were crumbling and burning. They fell to their deaths. They did not commit suicide.
If you believe in the right of a woman to abort her child, you can not logically be against suicide. But Christ followers DO NOT believe in abortion. . .
All churches that follow Christ believe murder (including self murder) is a sin.
Why would you have the right to end your own life, If you don't have the right to end someone Else's? What gives you this "right?" God never did. . . Just because he gave you free will, and you used this to become a sinner (as everyone has) doesn't mean you have the right to exercise your free will and decide to murder someone. Even if that someone is you.

Hello:
Just because God gave us free will does not meant that all things are permitted. The reason for the free will is to know what we choose...because in this life what we choose is more or less what.who we are. Nothing worth doing is easy and life itself is not easy (thusly life is worth doing) so just because it may make some people's lives easier does not make it permissible...at least to the church.
In a way Jesus did know how the people would react and that does mean that he chose his death, however 1) the people could have acted differently had they so chosen and 2) to take ones life senselessly is just that senseless, however what Jesus was doing was (according to catholic doctrine) taking one for the team...a big one...so that the gates of heaven would again be open.
As for abortion vs suicide...in the former you are taking a possibility and ending it...in the latter you are taking an actuality and ending it. One could argue that because the unborn child has more life ahead of it that it would be more moral to kill oneself...
To choose to be steadfast in an action is different than ending ones life because of misery. Perhaps the sin is hating God's creation?
I hope this helps

Personally, I don't agree with abortion; I think it's a form of murder. Now, suicide is considered a sin because it is throwing away the most precious gift God gave us. God did give us free will. We can do whatever we want, but that doesn't mean that we don't have consequences. I can go out now and do something offensive to someone else, but there will be consequences; there always are. Christians went to their death because they did not want to bury what they believed in with all their hearts because man wanted to be evil and tear away what they held dear. As for the death of Christ, that was a form of sacrifice for us. The torment that he received would have been directed to us for our wicked behavior and sinfulness. Because of Christ's crucifixion, we don't have to pay the ultimate price for our sin. We are now sinners saved by grace. The grace of God.

Jesus' actions were the will of the Father in the participation of the plan of salvation. A loving Sacrifice.
What the Catholic Church believes is this. If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law.
Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide
Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God
Suicide is seriously contrary to justice, hope, and charity. It is forbidden by the fifth commandment.

First the difference between suicide and Christ and Christian martyrs is that they sacrificed their lives for God, in my opinion something that is very different than suicide. Suicide is taking your life because of pain or shame or guilt. I'm a christian (not catholic) and I don't know about suicide... does God really send you to hell because of it? That's up to God no doubt, but I think he's against it because he created this world, this life for us and suicide is such a selfish act... it takes a your life, which God gave to you, and it hurts so many people around you.
I think that each situation of what we see as "suicide" is different that God is the only one who really knows what's going on, what's inside your head, what you want, God my be one who serves justice, but we can't forget that he is also merciful... and he knows pain too... he let his son be tortured and killed.

you have to know. well God allow free will not to distroy oneself. The bible didnot talk specific about suicides but martyrs is being force upon them not by choice. it is only the roman catholics that said in hope no one will go that routine.
as for Christian who really believe in Jesus their sins have been forGiven. We choose not to sins is because we love our Lord Jesus, and God the Father and the Holy Spirit. It hurt our God when we sin because we have a relationship with our God. WE go to heaven Because God Know us as His son also. When an unbeliever go to God's house(heaven) God doesnt have a relationship with them He will say I dont know you. people can do all the good and go to God's house then God say I dont know you.

We are supposed to value our lives.God gave it and He is the only one who has the right to take it away. What Jesus did was not suicide. If you jump in front of someone to take a bullet for them, it is not suicide. You sacrificed your life to save someone elses, Big difference. God bless!!

Not a Christian, nor do I subscribe to any organized religion, but I can tell you that most who commit suicide are not in their right minds. True clinical depression, a chemical imbalance of the brain that is based upon genetics(brain composition) being brought on by an extended period of sadness, when the brain can not rebalance itself without medicine, and bipolar disorder, a fully genetic fairly common disorder active since birth, are behind a lot of suicides.

Don't leave out the Americans:
GWB: there will be 'sacrifice'
perhaps he meant 'body bags'
And Don't leave out the Roman Catholics: John-Paul: 'sacrifice' must continue in the third millennium
Returning to middle ages is intellectual suicide.
Returning to law is as a dog turned to his vomit
Grace --> Mercy ---> Peace with you all. Amen.
