NATO is a military alliance and all members have their own stakes involved. It is again assuming importance because Putin is putting up a brave front and talking tough against Polish /Czech missile/defence umbrella and anti Iranian 'shield' and despite staggering economic pressuresRussia is facing is not prepared to cow down or westernize like Yeltsin. EU is about economic cooperation and many countries are already making Euro as reference currency and pushing out dollar. Europe is gaining economically through EU and US may soon face the pressure of losing the status of reference currency and unofficially rule world economic order. EU may again help the cause of Europe and in turn NATO by becoming strong. The US is an undeclared economic rival of EU but shares common defence interests in NATO. Thus the US and EU are like to friends-inevitable fuming inside at each other's prosperity.EU does appear the upcoming super-coalition.

A comparison between the EU and USA would be relavant though NATO is not comparable. They are completely different types of organizations and it's like comparing apples to bananas. If Europe ever gets their act together, which won't happen, then the EU has the potential to become a major player on the world stage. I don't see this happening because the EU is composed of too many countries that want to keep their identity separate. Having said this it isn't too distinct from the original states before they became united though Europe has farther to go before this would happen and their ideology is significantly different than the US pro-freedom melting pot that created the US.

No, it looks to be China? That is surely a way ahead. You can certainly compare EU and USA. To do so properly would take hours and is beyond my capabilities. NATO is a politico - military organisation - so really supposedly different.
