Personally, I prefer just to work it out....

2x^2 - 5x + 7 = 0
2x^2 - 5x = -7
x^2 - 5x/2 = -7/2
x^2 - 5x/4 - 5x/4 + 25/16 = 25/16 - 7/2
x(x - 5/4) - 5/4(4 - 5/4) = 25/16 - 56/16
(x - 5/4) (x - 5/4) = -31/16
(x - 5/4)^2 = -31/16
x - 5/4 = √(-31/16)
x = 5/4 +/- i√31/4
x = answer d (sort of)

-4x^2 + 9x - 8 = 0
-4x^2 + 9x = 8
x^2 -9x/4 = -8/4
x^2 - 9x/8 - 9x/8 + 81/64 = 81/64 - 8/4
x(x - 9/8) - 9/8(x - 9/8) = 81/64 - 128/64
(x - 9/8) (x - 9/8) = -47/64
(x - 9/8)^2 = -47/64
x - 9/8 = √(-47/64)
x = 9/8 +/- i√47/8
x = answer c (sort of)

2x^2 - 5x + 7 =0
x = [5 +/- sqrt(5^2-4(2)(7)]/(2*2)
x = [5 +/- sqrt(-31)]/4
x = 5/4 +/- isqrt(31)/4 {so d is one of the correct answers]

-4x^2 + 9x - 8 = 0
x = [-9 +/- sqrt(9^2-4(-4)(-8))]/(2*-4)
x = [-9 +/- sqrt(-47)]/-8
x = 9/8 +/- isqrt(47/-8 [So c is one of the correct answers]
