Because they pay him more money in a year to do it than I will earn in 15.
I went to the taping of Royal Canadian Air Farce show where Ron got to play Don. It was hilarious.

He's there to represent the CBC and to be Grapes' straight man. Even when he gets passionate about something or agrees/disagrees with Don, his job isn't to be the show, his job is to set up Cherry and he's great at it. When you see Ron at the Olympics and it's his show (so to speak) he's by far the best anchor in tv sports (I'm not sure there's a second place). CBC let Ron go a few years ago and the viewer/fan response was so overwhelming that they had no choice but to get hm back FAST.

The sad face of it all, is that Don Cherry and Brian Williams started this in 1982, and then took it on the road in 1984. Eventually Williams didn't want to tour so Cherry took former Blackhawk minor leaguer Jim Ralph with him. If you've ever seen their act (they tend to do the Canadian University circuit) Jim plays Ron spot on!
All the money raised has gone to Rose Cherry's home as well as minor hockey in every Canadian province. Through Cherry's various appearances in 2005, he was able to donate almost 10 million dollars to minor hockey in Canada.

In Canada we have our own Brian Williams, worked for years for the CBC but recently left to join another network. He's best known as Canada's face of the Olympics

I don't think he acts like a doormat. He is there to try and keep Cherry in check cuz while I do like him, Don does have some opinions about everything. Ron is basically the straight man in that duo. He is very knowledgeable though and I like him. I think both are very knowlegeable and entertaining to listen to and sometimes that is all I watch of the game.

He wasn't always like that. In the early 90's he had more backbone and Don was loud but not as loud as he is now. Its a part of the show - his job is to bring up a subject and let Don get the glory. Ron's a great hockey anchor/analyst. I hope he's on CBC for a long time.

I remember reading an interview with Ron Mc Lean a few years ago. Apparently the format was his idea, where Cherry is the loud, obnoxious, know it all and Mc Lean is the straight laced, school teacher type. Whether you like them or not you can't argue their success.

The key word here is "act". All part of the horse and pony show.

It has been part of the gimmick for however long they've been on the air together. If it's not broke, don't fix it.
