In my opinion, I beleive it is because we have never really experienced oppression or poverty. Everything is easilly obtained, nothing is a treat or privelege any more; this in turn means a lack of satisfaction in acheivments. If everything is easy in your life, you have never had to work for anything or acheive anything. It is this lack of satisfaction that means we have nothing to feel good about.
If I could advise people how to beat depression I would say take up a new sport and practise it all the time till you are able to beat people who have doing it for years, then practise more till you win a tournament or competition, but keep striving to perfect it. In acheiving your personall goals, which you set yourself and aren't thrust upon you, along with all the exercise you will be doing, should easilly stave off depression.

Because we choose to be, in my opinion. We look at the world from the bad side, because we have been led to believe that if we look at the good side of things and are choose to be happy, and live a clean life than we are dopey, or dorky. Because of this we can't really be ourselves. Too much concern is put into what people think of us, and not what we think of ourselves. It is a sad world we are living in when a person chooses to be something they are not and in the process making themselves more miserable with each day that they choose to live a lie.

Have you even been watching the news lately?
There are so many tragedies that happen everyday.
America at war and our troops are dying everyday.
School shootings on the rise people get killed 24/7.
I think people have plenty of reasons to be depressed.

realizing, or living with, the suffering in the world, plastic surgery, tv shows telling you to be a certain way/look, spending hard earned money on STUFF you don't need, loss of God/prayer, loss of kindness/politeness, war, senseless murders, starvation, homelessness, uninsured/debt, job loss, more and more illness, caring more for money than people.

because society dictates that we must have this and we must have that...always bigger, better and more expensive. No more cassette tapes, buy CD's. Now no more CD's, buy blueray. No more VCR tapes, buy DVD's. Who can afford to keep changing, with this and everything else? I know it sure depresses me !!
