You shouldn't be trying to do anything. Just love him as he is and expect nothing in return. Worrying and wondering will only be hell for you, and nothing positive will come out of it.
If he is disrespecting you and mistreating you then you should leave him; otherwise just stop thinking so much...

You don't stop trying. If you truly love someone then you stop expecting anything in return and love them for who they are and what they give... If it's not enough then you really only loved the idea of the relationship, not the person anyways...

You stop trying when you are dead. Life is a learning process. Yes, we can have enough "stuff" and we can reach a point in our lives where we are content and happy. However, we must always embrace what a new day chooses to send our way and hopefully continue to grow as individuals and as couples. That way it is always fresh and alive.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Do you dare to love like this?!

When you know that they are not going to change and you are never going to get back as much as you put into the relationship and you are not willing to settle for that. It is time to move on. You can change peoples bad habits and you can change their knowledge, but you will never change someone's personality if they are not willing to change it for themself. Hang in their sweetie...been there, done that :)

Right about the time you realize you truly deserve better than he is capable of giving you.

Good luck.

When you realize you aren't being loved the way you deserve to be loved and start respecting yourself enough to move on.
