I had the same problem with Windows XP Pro. My download said from Microsoft, "downloaded and ready to install". Would not install any of the latest updates. I went to Microsoft download and all the downloads showed ready to install, plus all I saw was 0 kb. and 0 time to download.
I went to the tech. link and download one at a time and they all installed. Here is the link.
Microsoft advised me that they had no answer to my problem as my pc is 100% clean. Microsoft even ran a scan of my system and found nothing wrong & 100% clean.

It is a real pain to install one by one. Will open as a file from technet, then convert to Microsoft, file, and Microsoft will back up your system and install the file.
Yes you do them.

You should get at least the security updates. There are many holes in Windows that Microsoft is still plugging. It's more then a virus issue. It's about someone getting into your computer or using your computer for evil purposes. Not very likely but possible.
Check this link to try and find out why your updates aren't working.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
Start there and search the support site with more specific errors.
Of course if you do not have a valid copy of XP the updates will never work.

Antivirus programs won't protect you against a lot of web based malware (the sorts of things you can pick up by going to an infected website).
Antivirus programs likewise won't keep your computer from crashing-- another reason microsoft puts out updates-- to fix generic problems.
Finally- why are the updates failing? is it due to a problem on your end like an unauthorized copy of Windows or some technical problem? Leaving a known problem unfixed isn't wise.

The first guy said;
"totally not necessary. those updates are only there so microsoft can give it's users a false sense of security."
That's nonsense... The security updates fix major security wholes in Windows, which could allow a hacker complete control of Windows...
Have you tried downloading directly from the website?
You don't say why the security updates fail, what messages do you get?

Well, is your copy of windows genuine ?, if the answer is No then this is the reason why you can not install updates,
On the other hand if you do have a genuine copy of windows you will need to download the Genuine Advantage Notification tool from Microsoft to be able to install any updates they might issue,
go to http://www.microsoft.com/updates where they will check your computer to see first if the copy of windows which you have is genuine once this has been confirmed and you do have a legal copy they will then start to install this piece of software first before they start to download any updates which you might need for your computer. good luck
