I dont know.. what's the actual reason? Just too lazy? I am with you there sometimes.
Try you got stuck in traffic, you lost an important paper, do you have any kids? you could say that you got into a snag at their school dropping them off, or maybe you got lost? What about the alarm, it went off late, or you were shopping for a gift for him? But then you'd have to shovel out some cash for a real gift ;]

Car Troubles usually works... tell him your car wouldnt start up for some reason... it look a boost to make it start... or flat tire..

traffic held me up, my car had a flat or an accident...make the accident that held you up a minor one or else, if it was a big one..it would make the newspaper and your boss would know you are lieing.

bridge went up, car crash, husband turned the alarm off. Stepped in dog poo and had to go clean your shoes off so you didn't get it all over your gas peddle. (that's happened to me because I was late and didn't take the time to clean my shoe)
