Yet another example of poor policies and poor decision making on part of the school staff. Why can't people use common sense.
Next thing you know they will be banning pens and pencils from school as they could be used to stab people.

I don't know, it may be necessary as a general rule in todays schools, were they have taken God, and thereby right and wrong, out of the textbooks. Used to be, every guy would carry a knife, and most times a gun to. Back then, some crazy gunman, or knifer, wouldn't get three feet. And on top of that, their weren't crazy gunmen. But on this individual case, without taking a look at the big picture. . . This is ridiculous. Me? I ALWAYS carry an 8 inch knife, which is the largest one legal to carry where I live, and I guarantee you are safer in a place where me and my friends (who have similar views about knife/gun control) can fight a murderer on even ground, with both people armed, than in a place where I'll be unarmed and he will have a knife or gun that has been made illegal (big deal! it's illegal, only the people who are safe with guns anyway care about that! Murderers will get their hands on an illegal weapon, they are committing murder anyway, what do they care about breaking knife or gun laws?)

No they didn't. The schools handbook explains all prohibited items that cannot be in schools. It even includes nail files. The Sheriffs office is correct that they have no choice but to follow the law. It does not matter that she was not "brandishing" it. Knives are illegal in schools. I'll bet her parents would have been named in a lawsuit if another child had grabbed the knife and stabbed someone, even though she was not "doing anything wrong".

In the article they said she didn't brandish it, didn't use it inappropriately, didn't do anything wrong.......
Yet they are charging a ten year old with a >felony< for this.
A child of the same age could be smoking pot and having sex behind the school and the only punishment she'd get would be a trip to the counselor.

Doesn't the cafeteria carry knives???
You know, if I really wanted to, I could take a [textbook] and beat the **** out of my ex!!!! But, I had to study. And he wasn't worth it...
People hurt people, not the object.
You know, stories like this make me laugh!!! There are much bigger worries!!!

No but the parents should also be arrested for allowing the daughter to go to school with a potentially lethal weapon !
However innocent this seems it is still a lethal weapon in schools someone else couild have seized it and used it
