They sold slaves to them. They'd always kept slaves from raiding enemies, but really went for it once it became really profitable. Cleaned out the whole west of africa practically.

there you go, a piece of history you probably didn't know till now. Africans caught, enslaved and then sold other Africans to the Portuguese and Spanish slave traders, who then sold them tot eh slaver ship captains for transport to Brazil ( 70 %) West Indies 15% and USA 10%..
so without African willing co-operation, there never would have been a slave trade.
The only time Western powers seized parts of Africa was the United States helping black Americans in seizing what is now Liberia ....Liberia is Latin for Fee Land) in 1840.....Monrovia Liberia is named for President James Monroe as a country for freed slaves that wanted to return to Africa,,,,,.....and the Brits doing the same to set up a land for freed slaves in Sierra Leone, capital, Freetown.....
