i is done by stroking a magnatizedobject with a non-magnatized object. the strokes should be done in one constant direction only. what thisdoes is it alligns the particles in the metal so that their positve ends and negative ends point at opposing directions(polarizing). once this is done, you have a magnet. this is the working principle of a magnet. when you stick a piece of metal to a magnet, it temporarily transforms into a magnet. this is because the magnetic field of the magnet alligns the particles of the metals in the polarized order. once the force field is removed, the particles continue their random arrangements(arrangement refers to non-polarized order). what stroking does is it alligns the particles permenantly(but not permenant literally. but a considerably long period of weeks or perhaps months depending on the strength of the magnet used). another method is by wrapping a solenoid(loops of lightly insulated wire) around a metal and passing current throough the wires. the electric field causes the metals particles to align like a magnet. magnet strength depends on number of loops and strength of current. vice-verca current can be produced in a solenoid when a magnet is passed through the solenoid. the second type of magnet is used by the cranes in junkyards because the strength can be controlled and can be made very big compared to naturally existing magnets.

Stroking a magnetizable object with a permanent magnet will usually magnetize it.

Additionally, many screwdrivers are intentionally magnetized, allowing them to hold onto screws better.
