Honestly....yes, I think we should. ^_^ Language barriers are one of the *biggest* things keeping people down, in terms of labor rights, and knowing how our society and laws work. Too many people get *robbed* in the "under-the-table" workplace, they get paid *WAY* less than minimum wage, and for what again? So some cheapskate, rich white farmer, or restaurant owner can just *use* people and keep them under their thumbs. I've seen it with my own two eyes.
Teaching people how to speak and *read and write* English would go a long way to solve that problem, so *everyone* can make a fair living.
But in all fairness....it *also* wouldn't kill most American students to learn a second language either. Catch is, you *cannot* wait until High School to start this. Sesame Street has this one right: you have to start kids off early, while they are still open to *learning how to speak*.
So....start in grade school. Use Kumon drills, or something like them (the old-school SRA system works too, I remember that one), and *teach* kids at least two languages. That is, *proper* English, with at least passably good spelling and grammar, and one other language. It doesn't even have to be Spanish....it should be one of at least two choices, since there are other languages out there (Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, among others) that we need to be aware of.
In short: *everybody* needs to get some extra language and culture. Some folks need (rather desperately, and *for their own* benefit too) to learn some English, while others need to broaden their tongue on other cultures too.
(*braces for the hate mail*)
Hope this helps...and that I'm not misunderstood. ^_^ Good Question (as in, well worded)!

I believe if you come here legally you should learn our language. If I were to move to another country, then yes I would learn their language just as well. It wouldn't be fair either way. I think people from different countries that do come here should also learn how to pronounce words correctly. I am not being racist in any way, but I sure don't want to look or seem ignorant if I can't understand what they are saying/asking.

Yes, it's the universal language, I wouldn't be where I am today if I never learn English. On the other thought, better not, cos I'll lose my job (I'm a translator) LOL

I think if you live in America, you should learn English and I think the younger people that know English should speak it and spell it right!
I am so tired of seeing people say "skool", for god sake, it is SCHOOL.
Some do it because they think it is "cool" but it isn't, it just show ones ignorance.
I ahve a bigger problem with that then I do people learning to speak engish.

I reckon it would be easier for everyone but then we'd also lose alot of the cultural aspects of language. I speak two languages and would love to learn more but if we all spoke english there would be no point.

I guess my answer is also a question,Why would you want to live somewhere and not be able to speak to people? If I lived in Mexico,Germany,Russia or where ever I would want to learn the language,Maybe because I never meet a stranger and love to talk to people.

Glad this is a lighthearted question because over in politics you would have people who were against immigration versus those who have a right to be where they want to be at each others throats.
My opinion is, if its not broken don't fix it.

No, but yes, if they are planning on visiting an english speaking country and if they are planning to move there, they should start using it as their first language.
and while I'm at it, adopt to that countries laws/rules etc. instead of trying to bring their own customs etc. to this country.
