The war nickels from 1942-1945 with the large mint marks above the dome of Monticello are made of 56%copper, 35% Silver, and 9% manganese. All other nickels (5 cent coins) are a mixture of copper and nickel. The first coins to be worth 5 cents are called 1/2 dimes and they were made of .900 silver except fot the vary early years the had less silver. The dime, quarter and 1/2 dollar minted 1964 and before are 90% silver. The 1/2 dollars from 1965-1970 are 40% silver, that is the 1/2 dollars only.

All dimes and quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver. Yes, a coin shop will buy them for around 25 times face value. Nickels only contained silver from 1942 to 1945. Those nickels have the distinctive large mint mark above the building on the back.

Not only were nickels made from silver but silver was also made from nickels. When the price of silver rose sufficiently people started melting down the nickels and getting the silver out of them.

Actually all "silver" coins were once made of silver... Just within the last century were they converted. It became too expencive for them to be made of silver anymore.
